Winter Storm Xanto Batters US
Winter Storm Xanto is producing blizzard conditions in the Plains and Midwest, and will lay down a swath of heavy snow, even some ice, from the Upper Midwest into northern New England into early next week.
Blizzard conditions are ongoing across southwestern Minnesota and parts of the central Plains. Near-blizzard conditions are ongoing in the Twin Cities, in what the NWS for southern Minnesota is calling a historic storm.
A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain has begun to fall in northern New York and northern Vermont. A few snow flurries are falling in parts of Maine. Snow and ice are also falling across portions of southern Canada ....

The frequency of extreme snowstorms in the eastern two-thirds of the contiguous United States has increased over the past century. Approximately twice as many extreme U.S. snowstorms occurred in the latter half of the 20th century than the first.
